Johanniter, the restaurant in the heart of the city of Zurich.
Hospitality is our tradition. In our restaurant, with its cozy corner benches and wooden tables, you will enjoy traditional Swiss cuisine, complemented by several specialties, all in a warm and inviting atmosphere.
OUR HISTORY
KEEPING IT LOCAL
Niederdorfstrasse was once the main thoroughfare of medieval Zurich, with small craftsmen’s houses closely packed along it. When the area was completely destroyed by a fire in 1280, two houses were built on the site where the restaurant stands today, each only one room wide. In 1890, the first innkeeper began business in house number 70 – then known as “Zum Römer” – which was owned by the Wädenswil brewery. The brewers quickly recognized a great opportunity and, seeing the marvelous potential of the location, decided to completely remodel both houses. In 1901, they were able to open a restaurant with its own butcher’s shop attached, named “Johanniter.”
The most notable witnesses of past times in today’s Restaurant Johanniter are the tall, vaulted ceilings, which tell a different tale from days gone by to each new visitor. The Johanniterhouse
The Johanniterhaus is a restaurant with a strong sense of tradition, located in a prime spot at the entrance to the old town’s “Niederdorf” area and in close proximity to Zurich Main Station. 365 days a year, you can enjoy our traditional Swiss dishes and seasonal specialties in the authentic atmosphere of a time-honored brewers’ inn.
In addition to the Brasserie Restaurant, the rustic and comfortable hall on the first floor can be booked for banquets and special occasions. Whether for annual dinners, birthday parties, club evenings, or other events, we are happy to accommodate groups of up to 130 guests at any time.
